What to do in a dental emergency
Toothaches & Jaw Pains
It’s important to seek immediate help if you experience mild or extreme pain in either your teeth or jaw area. In the meantime, you can gargle warm salt water which acts like an antibacterial mouthwash, helping to protect against infection and reduce inflammation.
Chipped, Cracked or Broken Tooth
If a tooth is chipped, fractured or cracked, it’s important to seek dental treatment as soon as possible. Delaying the treatment may mean that the tooth can’t be saved anymore, especially if there is also some nerve damage.
Knocked Out Teeth
The first thing to do is try to find the tooth (picking it up by the crown – not the root) and place it in a container of saline water or milk. Do not wash the tooth with tap water as this can damage the tooth further. It may be possible to successfully reattach the tooth if treated within 20 minutes of dislodgement.
Facial Swelling or Infection
Facial swelling and mouth abscesses should be assessed promptly as they can quickly progress to serious, life-threatening infections if left untreated. Use a cold-press to relieve the swelling and general over the counter medication to ease any pain.
